HARPER
âSomeoneâs been whistling a lot lately.â
I look over to April as she fastens her boot buckles. Theyâre hooker-height heels with gold clasps. Her hair is in a high bun to show off the thin gold hoops in her ears.
With a hand over my hip, I look at her in mock defense. âWhatâs wrong with a little mouth ditty?â
âIs that what weâre calling it these days?â
I throw a kitchen towel at her from my place near the sink. âIâm smitten.â
âI can see that. Youâve seen Tanner every day for two weeks. I was about to assume youâd moved off my futon.â
I open the dishwasher to unload it. âHis place is close to work. It logistically makes sense. Besides, Iâve been home.â I take out the silverware and place it on the counter. âTo get my clothes.â
She laughs. âYou can do whatever you want to do. Iâm happy as long as youâre happy.â April takes a spot on the other side of the dishwasher. She starts to take the dishes out and places them in cabinets. âIâm happy, too, in case you were wondering.â
I glance down at her boots. âI assumed. You think Iâm not gonna notice you putting on your best sex shoes and not think you have a certain someone in mind for those bad boys?â
âHis nameâs Gil, and he works in commodities. Heâs fifty.â
âLook at us. One robbing the cradle and the other having her cradle robbed.â
âI know. What will they talk about if we ever go on a double date?â
âTannerâs an old soul. Heâll be able to keep up.â
She closes the cabinet. âGilâs successful, but heâs a playboy in many ways. He can definitely hang with the younger crowd.â
I shut the dishwasher and follow her out of the kitchen. Her tag is hanging out of her sweater, so I tuck it in.
She does a twirl for me. âGood?â
âHot as hell. Knock him dead, tiger!â I give her a slap on the rear.
âWhat are your plans tonight?â
âTannerâs coming over. I didnât know you had a date. I was hoping you two could get to know one another.â
Her shoulders fall. âIâm sorry, Harp. You should have told me. I can cancelââ
âNo way! You enjoy your date. Oh, shoot. Do you need me to make myself scarce? We can go to Tannerâs place.â
She places her hands on my forearms. âNo worries. I can go back to his place. You two enjoy the apartment to yourselves. Just no hanky-panky in my bedroom.â
I give her a captainâs salute. âYes, maâam.â
As she puts her overcoat on, she fluffs her hair and asks, âWhat do you two do together? I mean, is it sex all the time? Iâd imagine having a twenty-two-year-old lover during your sexual prime is the equivalent to dying and going to heaven.â
I laugh in agreement. âWell, thereâs definitely lots of stamina on both our ends. But, no, itâs not all sex, all the time. We just kinda explore the city. Picnic at Bethesda Fountain, stroll around Belvedere Castle, or coffee at Washington Square Park.
